Over the past month (from the first Friday in July) the Twitter Top 10 portfolio held up relatively well. It was only down about 1.5% while the S&P 500 index fell about 3%. Half the stocks in the portfolio have gains and half have losses. Once again, the portfolio is showing abnormal behavior (but to be honest the rally out of the 2012 lows has been an abnormally strong rally so maybe we’re starting to see “normal” behavior). Back to the point…usually the stocks mostly move the same direction. What I think we’re seeing is a market that is finally starting to treat each stock individually rather than a high correlation between stocks in the market. Normally this would be healthy behavior, but after a strong bull run it shows investors getting more selective and warns of a thinning market. Keep an eye on the stocks that have the most support from the Twitter community over the next several weeks. If they continue to diverge with each other it will be warning about choppiness for the general market.

It’s the first Friday of the month so here are the August picks. We choose the 10 stocks with the most support on Twitter over the previous month as a model portfolio.
