U.S. stocks extended gains in afternoon trading, as a strong earnings report from Visa Inc. spurred a sharp advance in the Dow industrials.

The company exceeded expectations, including a 23% increase in year-over-year EPS on a 20% boost to the top line and an 11.5% jump in same-facility revenue.
