Tesla To Unveil ‘the D And Something Else’ On October 9th

Elon Musk caused quite the inquisitive stir on Wednesday with a cryptic tweet that dropped hints about Tesla's (TSLA) upcoming product reveal, which will take place on October 9th at the Paris Motor Show. The tweet read nothing more than, ‘About time to unveil the D and something else.’

Though comments on Musk’s twitter page include an infinite amount of D jokes, people are growing increasingly curious about the “something else” that was mentioned.

In response to the jokes Musk tweeted once more today, “No, it wasn’t intentional. Glad I didn’t mention the other letter!”

Unfortunately, this didn’t lend any additional information. If anything, the second tweet merely lathered on the mystery.

Speculations as to what the D could be vary, but the general consensus is that it will not be anything hydro related—Musk has openly stated that he feels they’re more of a marketing ploy for automakers than a long-term solution. So we know what it won’t be.

Hard to D-cipher

As to what the D will actually be—whether an additional vehicle or simply a new feature—no one seems to actually know. Guesses have included  ‘Driver Assistance’ features, upgrades to existing Teslas, or both the long-expected “budget” sedan and a smaller SUV, which Musk has previously hinted at during discussions on the third generation of Teslas.

Whatever the case, Musk has gotten everyone’s attention. Which comes as no surprise, considering his successes in the past.

Earlier this year Musk had a big win for another company that he co-founded in 2002, Space Exploration Technology (SpaceX). The company, which Musk currently holds the position of CEO and Chief Designer at, recently secured a contract with NASA for their long-anticipated Commercial Crew Program. SpaceX will combine efforts with Boeing to develop the rocketry and crew modules to ferry American astronauts to and from the International Space Station by 2017, a contract worth potentially $6.8 billion over the next few years.

Who knows, maybe the new Tesla will be outfitted with space gear. In any event, Tesla has got everyone’s attention.
