Why Facebook Made Moves On The Moves App

Facebook is getting closer and closer to taking over the world. Well, the world of mobile apps at least. The company is really pushing ahead with its goal of building and/or acquiring a series of mobile stand-alone apps. The acquisition that sparked the most buzz was the $19 billion deal with WhatsApp, and before that was the $1 billion deal for Instagram. They also developed Facebook Messenger, and launched the news aggregator, Paper. The latest addition to Facebook’s mobile app portfolio is the iOS + Android fitness tracking app Moves, by ProtoGeo Oy.

Now before you ask, let me just address that there is still no word over how much Facebook paid to acquire Moves. Between Instagram, WhatsApp, and the $2 billion spent on Oculus Rift – I guess we’ve become accustomed to Facebook dropping billions on most everything. Perhaps that’s why a rep from Facebook decided to stop our imaginations from running wild, by stating that the amount paid was “nowhere near the size of other acquisitions the company has made in recent months.” Well, okay, there goes that then.

Moves is the one and only app by ProtoGeo Oy, which was founded early 2012. They launched Moves a year later, and it quickly gained popularity. To date, it got 4 million downloads across iOS and Android, and has been known to be a “surprise hit.” Sure, there are lots of fitness apps out there, such as Nike +, Runkeeper, and Strava – but Moves is extra special because it can track and detect many activities automatically, including activity on public transit.

In not-surprising news, the acquisition sparked mixed reactions. We’ve seen this happen before with Instagram and WhatApp: users becoming concerned over how Facebook would make changes to their favorite apps. To address those concerns, ProtoGeo quickly announced that “…the Moves experience will continue to operate as a standalone app, and there are no plans to change that or commingle data with Facebook.” I guess that’s comforting to hear from ProtoGeo. That they don’t have plans. But what about Facebook? Maybe they have plans.

Regardless, I’m sure Facebook wouldn’t ruin a good thing, especially considering how it fits into Zuckerberg’s vision to connect the world (in practically every way he possibly can.) I’m curious to see how Facebook will ultimately use the Moves app. I feel Facebook will gather data on people who use Moves, and somehow use it towards targeted advertisements. However, the Facebook rep claimed they won’t use any data from the app. I think that’ll change pretty soon. Anyway, Facebook wrote in their press release that the Moves app would only be used to help users “take small steps towards more healthy habits and lifestyle.” Well that’s mighty kind of them. I still feel they will change their minds and use the app to gather data. Nothing personal, just business.
