Facebook Is One Step Closer To Taking Over The World With Pryte

I hope you’re keeping notes on Facebook’s acquisitions – cause here’s a new one! The social network giant freshly acquired Pryte (that’s Pryte with a “y”.)

Pryte FB

Pryte is a Finnish startup that is set to deliver more affordable Internet access in growing economies by giving their users time-capped access to individual apps. I’m sure you’re beginning to realize that this aligns with Internet.org, Facebook’s mission to Internet-connect the next 5 billion users in developing countries.

Yes, there’s a very good reason why you probably haven’t previously heard of Pryte. They haven’t even officially launched a product yet! What a way to strike gold! So why did Facebook make this move? According to a rep from Facebook, the masterminds behind Pryte have extensive experience in emerging markets, and established relationships with mobile operators in each of those markets. So it’s safe that say that Facebook inked this deal with Pryte for what they know and who they know. The knowledge and connections Pryte has to offer will certainly help Facebook connect people with inadequate access to broadband who turn to their mobile devices for connectivity.

Internet.org

I have a feeling that the brains behind Pryte will join forces with the brains behind Opera to get Internet.org running more quickly. Opera (also a part of Internet.org) has a product called Web Pass, which like Pryte, is geared towards emerging markets and lets operators sell time-based Internet access that’s tied to particular apps. There is also an ad-supported version of Web Pass, called Sponsored Web Pass (SWP.) SWP provides free mobile Internet to users without a data plan. The catch? They have to agree to accept ads. Sure, that can get pretty annoying, but hey, free data. An advertiser sponsors each SWP session, and when it runs out, users can choose to buy the standard Web Pass, or continue SWP with another advertiser.

It would be interesting to see what Pryte cooks up with Opera, since they are on the same path after all. Opera is ahead of the game with over 260 million mobile users, which means they will easily be able to provide Pryte the boost it needs upon launch.
