Top Highlights From Day 2 Of Mobile World Congress 2014

We’re in shock! Day 1 of MWC was full of many thrills and chills. Our team didn’t expect day 2 to be nearly as wow-worthy. Boy, were we proven wrong! Between the GSMA awards, revelations, and unveiling of new gadgets, we were going crazy keeping up with all the excitement.

Check out our list of highlights from day 2 of MWC. Like our highlights from day 1, this list is in no particular order:

HTC OneThe GSM Association crowned the HTC One as the “Best Smartphone” of 2013. Mobile phone enthusiasts knew all along that it’s a sweet phone, so that’s not surprising. Even so, it’s a pretty big deal considering the other phones they were up against: iPhone 5s, LG G2, Lumia 1020, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Why the HTC One, you ask? It was ultimately because of its sleek design, and fantastic UI, which provides a differentiated user experience.

There were many other categories in the 19th edition of the GSMA awards, including “Best Low-Cost Smartphone” and “Best Entry-level or Featurephone.” It’s great to see that the HTC One scored the top spot of the most coveted GSMA award.

CityMapper: Mobile App of the Year

CityMapper

Who snagged the GSMA award “Mobile App of the Year”? That title went to none other than CityMapper. They’re a hot public transport navigation app for London, New York, Paris, and Berlin. Their users (ranging from locals to frequent flyers) turn to the app to make sense out of the public transport in each city, because we all know how easy (and frustrating) it is to get lost in the web.

A panel of judges voted for CityMapper to nail the top mobile app spot. Other categories included “Best Entertainment App,” and “Most Innovative Mobile App. Kudos to CityMapper! Now let’s hope they expand to cover additional major cities.

Samsung: Smartphones and Smartwatches

Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 6.53.11 PMSmart wearables have not gone unnoticed at MWC. In fact, they stole the show in many instances. Case in point, Samsung. They relaunched the Galaxy Gear, and introduced their new device, the Gear Fit, alongside the Galaxy S5. Why? To share the spotlight.

They actually pulled a clever move there by pushing the wearables to build on the success of their devices, Not only did Samsung signal a focus on smart wearables, they also turned heads and got attendees (and Twitter) talking. Well played, Samsung. Well played.

BlackBerry CEO: The WhatsApp Effect

BBM LogoAdmit it. Didn’t you twitch just a little when you heard about Facebook buying WhatsApp for $19 billion? A little? Well BlackBerry CEO, John Chen sure did. He’s now open to selling BBM.

In an interview with CNBC at MWC, Chen claimed, “If somebody comes to me with $19 billion, I would definitely sell it.” We can’t help but wonder if he would have entertained the thought before WhatsApp lucked out.

Good luck Johnny Boy! BBM has approximately 85 million active users, which is a far cry from WhatsApp’s 465 million.  But hey, dreams can come true. Mark Zuckerberg is happy with the deal he made with WhatsApp, and feels certain he’s getting a lot of bang for his buck.

In this excerpt from his talk at MWC, Zuckerberg explains why he bought WhatsApp, and his vision to connect everyone in the world. With that vision in mind, John Chen might actually have a shot.

Considering the success of days 1 and 2 at MWC, our team can’t wait to see what day 3 has in store!
