Why You Should Keep An Eye Out On Drones In Mainstream And Tech

Just as news about drones made its way into the mainstream, it slid into the tech scene as well. Things are going to get interesting as drone wars take place between companies. Things will also get fascinating as drones are used to make a positive difference in the world. Regardless, they are innovations in development that are definitely worth keeping an eye out on.

Amazon Drone

It all started early last December, when Amazon made headlines after announcing their plans to launch a drone delivery system, Prime Air. They announced that these “oktocopters” would deliver packages to recipients within 30 minutes. Amazon’s CEO, Jeff Bezos, claimed these drones are set to take off as soon as 2015. Honestly, I don’t know about that. I’m all for a leap into the future, but having thousands of drones taking up airspace by 2015 sounds a little too optimistic.

Google made its way center stage a few weeks later after announcing that they’re also toying with the idea of a drone delivery service. At the time of announcement, it has been a top-secret project in the Google X lab. You know the Google X lab, that’s where the self-driving car, Glass, and other amazing innovations came to life. Anyway, I have a feeling Google might have the upper hand here. Mostly because they’re Google. Also because they already launched a same-day delivery service in the San Francisco Bay area. Google is planning to soon make those deliveries using drones and their self-driving cars. As a test.

All we can do is sit back, and wait to see who wins the battle of the drones between Amazon and Google. It’s not just a matter of who does it first, it’s also a matter of who does it right. Don’t hold your breath though; it’ll likely take another year or two for it to happen IF it happens. It would be pretty funny if UPS ends up pulling the rug from under Google and Amazon though. The delivery giants are also researching options to use drones, only it would send packages to designated locations.

In recent news, Facebook is in the works to buy Titan Aerospace for $60 million. Those guys are drone makers. No don’t worry, Facebook isn’t developing a same-day delivery service – they’re actually onto something revolutionary here. If and when all works out, these drones will beam wireless Internet access to consumers in underdeveloped parts of the world. This is a part of Facebook’s effort to connect billions of people around the world who currently don’t have Internet access, such as remote sections of Asia and Africa.

Oh, I forgot to mention: these Titan drones are huge. Their Chief Executive, Vern Raburn said, “Think of it as a Tesla Model S, with wings.” These giant drones will fly at an altitude of 65,000 feet, have a 165-foot (50-meter) wingspan, and can stay aloft for up to 5 years on solar power.

As of now, it doesn’t look like Facebook and Titan Aerospace have anything to worry about as far as competitors are concerned. Check out the vid below to learn more about Facebook’s plans. The images are seriously impressive.
