Festivities for the 25th anniversary of “Die Wallfall”, the fall of the Berlin Wall between the old Communist East Germany and the rest of the world were rather subdued because the now free German railroad workers went on strike. Strikes were illegal in the old German “Workers' Paradise”.

September E-mini S&Ps (ESU14 +0.30%) this morning are up +0.41% at a fresh record high and European stocks are up +1,24% at a 1-3/4 month high after Russia and Ukraine discussed steps toward a cease fire.

The statistical odds against two fatal plane crashes at one smallish airline killing hundreds of innocent passengers in a matter of 3 months must be infinitesimal. Yet that has happened to Malaysian Airlines. Both crashes appear to have resulted from reckless human behavior and were not accidents.

June E-mini S&Ps (ESM14 +0.08%) this morning are down -0.04% as prices consolidate gains following Wednesday's rally to a record high.
